Tennis Regionals Round 1

The Stephenville High School varsity tennis team came ready to compete today in Lubbock, taking part in a high-stakes, single-elimination Regional Championship. In this format, competitors can play up to four rounds, with the ultimate goal of earning a Regional Title. Athletes who finish in First, Second, or Third place will qualify for the State Finals, scheduled for Thursday, May 15 through Friday, May 16 in San Antonio.

The day started strong, with Rose Cordes kicking off the morning by dominating her semi-final match against Decatur. She claimed the win in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, securing a spot in the finals.

In Mixed Doubles, Laura Haynes and Travis Williams delivered a commanding performance of their own. The pair swept past the Austin Panthers with a decisive 6-0, 6-0 victory. They’ll return to the court this afternoon to face Canyon Randall in the semi-finals.

Ryder Sims faced a tough opponent in the first round, falling to Liberty. While his tournament run ends here, Sims will be back on the court next season as a senior.

In another Mixed Doubles match, Katy Heller and Rhett Donham fought hard but came up short in their matchup against Liberty.

Representing Stephenville in Boys Doubles, Gabe Cortez and Derrick Hunter put on an impressive performance, defeating their opponents 6-1, 6-1. The win moves them forward to face West Plains in the next round.
