Lubbock, TX–They may not always seem to do things the easy way, but the 2026 Jackets do find their way to victories regardless. Stephenville beat West Plains 35-17 on Friday night in a game that appeared to be a blow out early. The Jackets ended the 1st quarter up 21-3 and had moved the ball with ease. Early in the 2nd quarter, the Ward Dog defense created a turnover and the Jacket offense went back to work. On the next play, a tipped ball led to an interception. Another night of the turnover bug had begun.
Stephenville has already learned earlier in the year that turnovers could keep an opponent in the game (Brownwood). The interception on the tip was the first of three and it certainly kept West Plains in the game. Stephenville’s defense would be called upon multiple times to protect the lead as the offense did not score in the 2nd or 3rd quarters.
Time of possession would be the biggest disparity its been all season. The time difference would finish almost double for West Plains. This is truly an amazing stat considering the Jackets kept the ball for most of the 4th quarter.
In the 3rd quarter, West Plains would pull to within four at 21-17. They would get no closer. The War Dogs kept them at bay and the offense found their footing. The Jackets scored the final 14 points. The final touchdown drive was exclusively running as Stephenville leaned on their weight room and conditioning to move the ball.
Stephenville finished with 392 yards of offense on 237 yards passing and 155 yards rushing. West Plains had 253 rushing and 187 passing. The Wolves also turned it over three times with one interception and two fumbles.
Stephenville gets the Bye next week before district begins on October 9th. The Jackets open district at home against Lampasas. It will also be The Heart of Gold game. This year’s recipient will be Stephenville student Skylar Burris. The community is encouraged to purchased Team Burris t-shirts. Game time is scheduled for 7pm.
