The Stephenville Yellow Jackets opened play at the Dave Campbell’s Texas Football 7-on-7 State Championships with a hard-fought battle against defending state champion Hamshire-Fannett.

Hamshire-Fannett jumped out to an early 7-0 lead, but Stephenville quickly answered to cut the deficit to 7-6 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half.

The defending champions extended their lead to 14-6 before the Jackets responded once again, making it a 14-12 contest.

Stephenville continued to build momentum and surged ahead late in the half. The Yellow Jackets took a 20-14 lead into halftime after scoring 20 unanswered points.

Hamshire-Fannett responded in the second half, reclaiming the lead at 21-20 before adding another score to move in front 28-20.

The Jackets showed plenty of fight down the stretch, finding the end zone to pull within two points at 28-26 with just 2:30 remaining.

Despite the comeback effort, Stephenville was unable to regain possession and the defending state champions held on for the narrow victory.
